Dedication of SHINE in Cape Town

April 2026

A message from Larry Kapustka on the opening of the SHINE centre in Cape Town, South Africa:

The initiative to honour Susan Kristoferson, Susan’s Hub for Innovation, Nurturing, and Empowerment (SHINE) was officially launched on April 9th, 2026. The first person to begin the program and the first volunteer instructor were among the attendees at this festive event. It was a great honour and a humbling experience for me to be part of the opening of this important program. After cutting the ribbon to the facility, Beatrice Opeolu and I reflected on the passion that Susan promoted in the Days-for-Girls (DfG) global effort to empower girls and young women and reiterated the goals of SHINE. Later in the week, Beatrice and I travelled to nearby Rawsonville, where DfG reusable menstruation management kits had been distributed. There we were pleased to hear about the positive impact the kits had for one of the women in attendance.

A few moments from the SHINE Skills Center launch in Cape Town — a space that has been taking shape for some time and finally opened its doors.
From setting up the space to welcoming our first guests, it was a meaningful start to what SHINE is building. Focused on practical skills — sewing, creativity, and entrepreneurship — SHINE exists to support women and girls building pathways toward income and independence.

We’re now open to:
• Trainees (women and girls 16+)
• Volunteers and mentors
• Partners who want to support or collaborate
